유하연 작가는 유화를 매체로 내면을 탐색하는 작가다. 미술을 전공하지 않았지만, 오히려 그 거리가 그림 앞에서 더욱 솔직해질 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 사회의 기준과 타인의 시선 속에서 흐려진 자신을 되찾기 위해, 감정과 기억을 화면 위에 겹겹이 쌓고, 긁고, 덧바르고, 벗겨내는 과정을 반복한다. 

작가는 이 작업을 ‘사이걷기’라 부른다. 고립과 연결, 확신과 불안, 꾸밈과 솔직함 사이를 오가며 자신에게 끊임없이 질문을 던지는 과정이다. 유화의 물성과 시간성은 감정의 층위를 드러내기에 적절한 도구가 되어주며, 두껍고 얇은, 일관되지 않은 표현들은 작가의 진심을 대신한다. 완성된 작업을 세상에 내보이는 것이 여전히 두렵지만, 그 두려움 속에서 진짜 자신을 마주하고자 하는 여정을 멈추지 않는다.

U Ha Yeon is an artist who explores her inner world through oil painting. Although she did not major in art, this distance has, in many ways, allowed her to approach the canvas with greater honesty. In an effort to reclaim the parts of herself blurred by social norms and the gaze of others, she repeatedly layers, scratches, paints over, and strips away emotions and memories on the surface of her works. 

She refers to this process as “walking the in-between.” It is a journey of constant self-questioning—moving between isolation and connection, certainty and anxiety, pretense and sincerity. The materiality and temporality of oil paint serve as fitting tools to reveal the layered nature of these emotions. Thick and thin, inconsistent strokes coexist on the canvas, standing in for the artist’s raw truth. Though showing her completed works to the world remains a source of fear, she continues the journey—facing herself through that very vulnerability.
